NRT Nutrition Response Testing
*NRT stands for Nutrition Response Testing. NRT is a technology that obtains critical information about bodily function from the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Autonomic refers to something that occurs involuntarily. Bodily functions like eye blinking, heart and breathing rates, digestive metabolism, immune response, hormone regulation and so forth are regulated by the ANS.
There are two controls to the ANS: 1. Sympathetic 2. Parasympathetic. Think of them as our body’s accelerator (sympathetic control) and brake (parasympathetic control) – our “go pedal and “whoa” pedal. When our bodies are healthy and in balance, these systems function properly and are in tune with one another; the sympathetic dominates when we are active, the parasympathetic when we are resting.
These regulators are responsible for healthy functioning, including our ability to heal. It is when there is an imbalance, blockage or interference that we experience symptoms such as allergies, acid reflux, high blood pressure, chronic pain, headaches and the like. Think of these symptoms as “check engine lights” or “alarm bells.” These imbalances can be corrected safely, naturally and effectively by accessing the ANS.
I was taught to use NRT by Dr. Freddie Ulan DC, CNN Chairman of Ulan Nutritional Systems and Founder of Natural Health Improvement Center in Clearwater, Florida. Dr. Ulan is one of the world’s top nutritional practitioners and teachers. NRT is a simple and direct system of analyzing the body in order to determine the underlying causes of ill or non-optimal health. The system is based on the fact that your body has the full potential to heal itself when given the right nutrients. When performing NRT the body provides reliable information and consistent feedback which I utilize to design a healing program specific to your needs.
In an effort to make this system easier to understand, I will use an example that most people have experienced, an electrocardiogram, commonly referred to as an EKG. When undergoing an EKG, electrical energy runs from your heart over wires to a machine that records the data and translates it to a chart or graph that can be read to help you understand the health of your heart. NRT is similar, but instead of connecting electrodes to the reflex areas I place my one hand. With the other hand I test the muscle of your extended arm. If the reflex being contacted is “active” the nervous system will respond by reducing energy to the extended arm, and your arm will weaken and drop. This drop tells me there is an underlying stressor or dysfunction which could be effecting your health.
NRT analyzes the different points and areas on the surface of your body that relate to your state of health and to the flow of energy in each and every organ and function of your body. The neurological reflexes are derived from the part of the nervous system whose job it is to regulate the functions of each and every organ. The acupuncture points are selected from the ancient Chinese system of acupuncture, which is thousands of years old. Interestingly, since the human anatomy has not changed significantly in thousands of years, the utilization of these reflexes and specific points have become extremely useful because they are so accurate. Each NRT reflex represents a specific organ, tissue, or function and indicates the effect that energy, or the lack of energy, is having on your body. This is my system of identifying exactly what your body needs and how well I am meeting that need with the current healing program recommendations.
What I might find with NRT?
Common stressors that I find are scars, immune challenges, chemical challenges, metal challenges and food sensitivities. These stressors can and will prevent your body from healing. I will make specific recommendations of whole food supplements, dietary changes and lifestyle changes to help you rid your body of the offending toxin or stressor(s). Once the underlying stressor(s) is corrected, the weak muscle response will no longer occur and your body has full potential to heal.
The Advantages of NRT
Utilizing your own body for analysis allows for faster results with no expensive lab fees, no time lost for appointments to have tests performed on expensive equipment and no drugs or surgery.
How soon will you see results?
Since every case is personalized, the results of every case is different. Some patient’s report relief in as little as a few appointments. Chronic illness does not occur overnight and can take some time to clear the root stressor(s) causing the ill health. Those who follow the recommendations closely usually restore the fastest. With any case, no matter how complicated, I monitor your progress and adjust your program as needed to achieve healing as quickly and efficiently as possible.
What conditions can NRT address ?
A better question might be, “What can’t Nutrition Response Testing address?” Here is a partial list of conditions we address and conquer on a daily basis:
Acid Reflux, ADHD, Allergies, Arthritis, Asthma, Autoimmune, Bloating, Candida, Chronic Pain, Colds and Flu, Constipation, Depression, Diarrhea, Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Food Sensitivities, Headaches/Migraines, Heart Conditions, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, IBS/IBD, Infertility, Insomnia, Menopause, Multiple Sclerosis, Osteoporosis, PMS, Skin/Hair/Nail Issues, Tremors, Stress, Weight Control, and many others

Why I recommend Whole Food Supplements? And how are they different?
America is overfed and undernourished. Lack of consumption of whole foods and a sedentary lifestyle lead Americans to be less healthy. Our food sources are refined, processed and most of the time contain hydrogenated oils, added sugar/sodium and vitamin isolates. The use of whole food supplements enables you to provide your body with these missing vital nutrients for good health. A supplements quality, quantity and complexity is the key. Whole food supplements contain complete whole food concentrates. They contain the vitamins, minerals, trace minerals and phytonutrients and are blended into a concentrate. A small amount of a whole food can be more important to the human body than an isolated single vitamin. An isolated single vitamin lacks the complexity of all the nutrients found in a whole food. And merely taking more will not supply all the nutrients your body needs.

Why I recommend herbs?
Herbs can be a powerful adjunct to acupuncture care. They are used to strengthen, build and support the body or to clear it of excess problems like a cold, fever or acute pain. They can build up your internal strength so you can receive the full benefits acupuncture has to offer and provide a safe, effective and drug free way to become well and stay healthy, naturally.
